Ivar Hill - Best place to visit near Palani | Ivar Malai - A historic place near Palani

Those who subdue the five senses and live knowing the five senses through their siddhi (knowledge) are called 'siddhas'. They often sat in dense forests and mountains and attained enlightenment through meditation. Those who attain this stage become sages and siddhas. In that way, it can be known that many Siddhas have lived and attained salvation through many Jeevasamadhis in Palani area.
Ivarmalai is located three kilometers from Papampatti on the Palani-Kolumum road. Widely known to the outside world, this mountain has produced many sages and siddhas. Similarly, the Jains also got enlightenment on this mountain and attained salvation.
It is said that during the Dvabara era, when the epic Mahabharata took place, the Panchapandas stayed on this mountain with Draupadi when they lost their country and lived in the forests, hence the name 'Five Hills'. The hill situated near it to the south is called 'Duryodhana Hill' and 'Diryodhitai' Hill.

Puranas say that Bogar Siddhar, who designed the Moolavar idol of the Palani Murugan temple, was associated with the five hills. While returning to India from China, Bokar suffered from Brahmahati dosha. To get rid of this dosha, Ivar performed puja on the hill.
At the end of it, his favorite deity Bhuvaneshwari Amman appeared and installed the idol of Murugan on Palani Hill and blessed him to worship it with Navabhashanam. According to this, the statue of Murugan in Palani is said to have been made by Bogar.
Generally Hindus have separate temples to worship Panchabhutas. They are:- Land - Kanchipuram, Water - Thiruvanaikaval, Wind - Kalakasti, Fire - Thiruvannamalai, Sky - Chidambaram. But this Ivar Hill is said to be the place where all the Panchabhutas were worshiped at one place.
Ivarmalai is situated in a perfect environment for meditation. In that way, many people from various states like Tamil Nadu and Kerala are coming here and doing meditation. About 150 years ago, Narayanasamy Paradesi from Kerala came and stayed on this hill. Knowing that the Panchapandas were staying there, he built a temple and worshiped the goddess Draupadi. In time he attained salvation there. After that Padmanabhaswamy and Periaswamy who came by his way also came here for meditation and attained salvation.
According to the spiritual saying 'wherever there is a mountain, there is a child', Lord Muruga, the god of Kali Yuga, graces the devotees as a 'child labourer' on this mountain. Likewise, the Vallalar Sanmarka Sangam is established on the hill and has its Math. About 75 years ago, a Vallalar devotee, Murukananda Swamy, established the Vallalar Mutt at Ivarmalai so that those seeking the true meaning of life and peace could come here and reap its benefits.
Lakshmana Chettiar from Palani was suffering from an incurable disease during the time when this Murugananda Swami was living in Aivarmalai. When searching for Lord Muruga, he asked him to build a temple on Ivar Hill and worship him. Then it was heard that Kulantai Velapar temple was built there. Like the Palani hill temple, Itumpan also has a separate shrine.
In this Kulantai Velapar temple, pujas are held in three times, morning, afternoon and evening. Also on special days like Mata Karthikai, Amavasai, Poornami, Thirukarthikai, many devotees come to the temple to worship the Child Velappan. Likewise, there are separate sanctuaries for Ganesha at the foothills and at the top. The lamp lit in the incense burner at the Ganesha temple on the top of the hill is designed to be windproof. Villagers including Ayyampalayam, Pappampatti, Kuppampalayam visit this temple for Sami darshan.
There are two perennial sunas in Ivarmalai. They are called:- Surya Pushpa Karani, Chandra Pushpakarani. The sun rose is full of lotus flowers and the moon rose is full of lilies. These sunas are specially arranged so that the rays of the sun fall on the lotus and the rays of the moon fall on the lily flower. It is believed by the devotees that on the new moon day, the sun and the moon are in the same straight line and then the rays of the sun and the moon fall on Aivarmalam. Therefore, more than 10 thousand devotees come here on Adi Amavasi days to worship the goddess Draupadi and the child worker Velappan.
